Manchester United have confirmed Jose Mourinho as their new manager on a three-year deal at Old Trafford.

Talks between Manchester United and Mourinho’s representatives have been ongoing for the past week following the sacking of Louis Van Gaal, but it was announced on Friday morning that the former Chelsea boss will become the Dutchman’s successor.

Jose Mourinho said in a club statement: “To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game. It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.”

Mourinho joins Manchester United after being sacked from Chelsea in December, seven months after he had led Chelsea to the Premier League title the previous season.

He added: “I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans. I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years.”

Jose Mourinho’s appointment comes on the twelve year anniversary of his UEFA Champions League triumph with FC Porto in 2004. That year, Mourinho burst onto the scene when his side knocked out Manchester United along the way, leading to Mourinho’s famous sprint down the Old Trafford touchline.

Football Ticket Pad posted on Wednesday how the Jose Mourinho's appointment could divide opinion in Manchester, however, the club have chosen the 'Special One' to take the club forward.

Manchester United’s Executive Vice-Chairman, Ed Woodward and Jose Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes began talks when Van Gaal was sacked on Monday. However, after five days of negotiations, the Portuguese manager has signed a three-year deal with an option to stay at Old Trafford until at least 2020.

Manchester United sacked Louis Van Gaal two days after he had guided the club to their first trophy since the Sir Alex Ferguson era ended in 2013 after winning the FA Cup against Crystal Palace at Wembley. However, the club decided to part ways with Van Gaal after two years at the club.

Ed Woodward said: “Jose is quite simply the best manager in the game today. He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe, and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here.”

“I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome him to Manchester United. His track record of success is ideal to take the club forward.”

The 2016/17 Premier League season will also see Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola reignite their managerial rivalry which goes back to when the two managers were in charge of Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. The two managers will now go head-to-head managing the two Manchester clubs, Manchester United and Manchester City, as they bid to return their clubs to the top of the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho's first competitive match in charge of the Red Devils will be the 2016 FA Community Shield at Wembley where you can buy Manchester United vs Leicester City tickets from Football Ticket Pad.
