The January transfer window is always intriguing. Summer is when clubs and their managers have time to prepare for the upcoming season. They can think things over and formulate a clear and concise plan for how they want to approach the year of football.

A few months down the line and often those plans will have gone out the window. Whether it’s due to injuries, communication issues, or fixture congestion, problems always arise (especially around Christmas).

The January transfer window is an opportunity for clubs to address the issues that they are having halfway through the season and try to make things better. Often, you will see various loan deals intended to paper over the cracks. Occasionally, big-money signings will shock the footballing world.

In this article, we’re going to take a look at a few of the players who could be coming to the Premier League in January 2022, and how they might have an impact on the teams they will be joining. With the transfer window so close, things are certainly about to get interesting.

Everton - Viktor Mykolenko

This is a signing that is all but confirmed. Rafa Benitez shocked many fans recently when he dropped Everton’s first-choice left-back Lucas Digne due to a falling out.

This isn’t particularly new for Benitez; he enters clubs and roots out the players who won’t give everything. But Digne is popular amongst fans and has been for a while.

Despite this, his defensive performances have been quite bad this past 18 months and rumors suggest he has wanted a move away from Everton for a while.

Over the past week, the most reputable transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has said that Ukrainian left back Viktor Mykolenko to Everton is a done deal. Alongside this, his club Dynamo Kyiv has said it too. There has been nothing from Everton yet, but the young left-back is supposedly one of the brightest young talents around.

Arsenal - Ianis Stoica

Reports suggest that Arsenal has made a bid for 18-year-old winger Ianis Stoica, coming in at around 7.5 million Euros. However, FCSB, the club Stoica plays for, wants a little more money for him and a sell-on clause added to the agreement. Sounds like your typical meeting in FIFA manager mode.

Arsenal is currently reshaping their attacking lineup as manager Mikel Arteta rebuilds the team. The Spanish manager has recently dropped star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after a combination of bad performances and attitude problems.

With players like Aubameyang taking up valuable wages at the club, it is going to be a tough task to completely reshape the club. But Arteta has already made some good progress, bringing in young players who want to play for him and fit his vision for the team.

Newcastle - Jesse Lingard

Lingard is undoubtedly a talented player. He was once tipped as the hottest young prospect in English football, but it never quite worked out how many people imagined. It’s clear to see that he is a great footballer, but at Manchester United things just haven’t gone the way he planned.

Lingard's love for Manchester United is clear to see, but in a way, it seems to hold him back. His time on loan at West Ham last season was seriously impressive and he found his goalscoring form for the first time in years.

At this point, perhaps it would have been wise for Lingard to try and make a permanent move to West Ham or a similar club. Instead, he stayed at Manchester United to fight for his place. Since then, he has featured in a few key performances but he is far from being a starting player.

He has been linked heavily with Newcastle over the past few months since their new owners took over. On paper, this signing would make sense, and Lingard would undoubtedly be making a decent amount of money

The major problem is that Newcastle might not even be in the Premier League next season, and it’s quite hard to imagine Jesse Lingard in the Championship. He just isn’t a Championship-level player.

If we do see Lingard go to Newcastle, you could potentially expect to see a clause in his contract that will allow him to leave the club if they are relegated.

Chelsea - Lucas Digne

As was mentioned previously, the French international Lucas Digne has fallen out with manager Rafa Benitez and is looking for a move away from the blue half of Merseyside. With links to various clubs such as PSG, one name that keeps cropping up is Chelsea.

At the moment, Chelsea is struggling to perform to their previous level after an injury to their first-choice left-back Ben Chilwell. The drop-off between Chilwell and secondary left-back Alonso is quite large.

Lucas Digne is well known for being one of the best attacking left-backs in the league, and his stats say it all. He creates a huge amount of chances. In Thomas Tuchel’s system, this could work really well, as he plays a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 formation.

This allows the full-back to play with more creativity as a wing-back and essentially act as the key part of a team's attack.

Whether or not Digne would be content to be second in line after Ben Chilwell is unclear, but he could fight for his place. With his age being 28, he is nearing the end of his peak and would be wise to seek a move as soon as possible if he wants Champions League football before he retires.

Final Thoughts

The January transfer window is shorter than the summer transfer window so you have to know what you want to do and do it fast.

Some of the deals we see over the next month could completely reshape the league in its current iteration, so keep an eye out for some last-minute twists and turns!
